Nicaragua Coffee Route

04 days / 03 nights.
Begins and ends in Managua.

This program takes you to the mountainous northern area of Nicaragua, mixing natural beauty with cultural experiences. You will visit the house where our greatest poet, Ruben Dario, was born; you will also enjoy great views of the volcanic chain, explore an ancient canyon, learn about sustainable coffee production and marvel at the amazing talent of a very particular local artist.

DAY 01 Managua – Ciudad Darío – Estelí

Departure to Estelí. On the way we will visit Casa-Natal Rubén Darío in Ciudad Darío, where our great poet was born. We will continue with a visit to the stone carvings in Jalacate. His artist, Alberto Gutiérrez Jirón, has carved for almost 30 years the events that have been relevant to him and have marked the history of Nicaragua and humanity.

Then, we will go to the viewpoint Rancho Don Luis to enjoy the panoramic view of the Maribios volcanic chain that includes from San Cristóbal Volcano to Momotombo Volcano. Transfer to your hotel in Estelí.

DAY 02 Estelí – Somoto’s Canyon – Selva Negra

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Somoto Canyon. The Canyon is approximately 7 to 12 million years old and it is the birth site of Central America’s largest river, the Coco or Wangki.

We will start in the community of Sonis, from where we will walk 2 km until we reach the river where we will take the rowboats for about 700 meters until the entrance of the Canyon. At this point you have 3 options: 1. Walk on the rocks for 75 m and have a view of the canyon. 2. Swim in the waters of the Coco River. 3. Float on tires for about 400 m in the canyon. Finally we return doing the same tour in the boats and the walk until the entrance of the reserve.

Then we will depart to Selva Negra Ecolodge, located within Hacienda Hammonia in Matagalpa, surrounded by a thick cloud forest with abundant wildlife. Here you can learn about the history of nineteenth-century European immigrants, explore the hotel trails and learn about the sustainability practices of the farm.

DAY 03 Selva Negra

Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, we will explore Hacienda Hammonia, recognized as a pioneer in innovative and sustainable farming methods. You will visit the organic laboratory, the workers’ homes, the greenhouses, the cheese factory, the chicken coop and stable, where you will learn about the sustainable production of food, livestock and pastures. The local tour guides will lead you through the coffee plantations and the compost heap where you can see how the organic material is processed, reused and recycled.
