DAY 01 Airport – Panama City
Welcoming at Tocumen International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Panama City. Day at leisure.
Casa Panama Hotel has all the facilities and services you need to feel at home and enjoy the Panama experience. The hotel has a swimming pool and solarium on the roof terrace, overlooking the magnificent skyline of the City.
DAY 02 Panama City (B/L)
Breakfast at the hotel. Full-day city tour. First thing in the morning, we will visit the Miraflores Locks visitor’s center – the nearest set of locks to the city, makes it possible to learn about the history and the daily operation of the Canal. This visitor’s center has three main attractions: The Museum, the audiovisual presentation, and the lookout point where you’ll have the chance to see the ships passing through each one of the chambers.
After this, and accompanied by your guide, you will visit the charming “Casco Antiguo” or Old Quarter, built in 1673 after Panama La Vieja (the first city) was looted and burned. The predominant architectural style of the Casco Antiguo is a combination of Italian, French and Spanish colonial.
During the expedition through this colonial part of the city you will have the opportunity to visit some churches – including the famous Golden Altar which survived the plundering and destruction of pirate Morgan, and different parks and plazas while you learn about the history of the city.
Lunch is included in one of the restaurants of the Casco Antiguo.
After the lunch, you will begin your chocolate journey with a presentation about the cocoa production. In addition, you will have a chance to try a variety of chocolates and their aromas. The tasting includes chocolates with different percentages of cocoa and our chocolate candies with unique fillings, which represent the authentic flavors of Panama.
Transfer back to the hotel and time at leisure.
DAY 03 Panama City – Emberá Quera community – Panama City (B/L)
Breakfast at the hotel. Visit to the Emberá Quera Indigenous Community, located at the end of the Gatun River. The tour begins with a 30-minute ride through the river in a canoe with outboard; during the trip is possible to enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna of the region and learn a little bit about the lifestyle of the community.
Once in the community, one of the members will explain you in detail about the culture, the food and the language of the Emberas; and will answer all the questions you may have about their way of life. Besides, a cultural presentation with traditional dances and music will allow you to interact with the group and the members of the community. At the end, you will have the opportunity to shop some of the handmade crafts by the community residents. A light, traditional lunch is included during the tour; usually based on the catch of the day.
DAY 04 Panama City – David – Boquete (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Private transfer to Albrook Airport to take the domestic flight to David. Welcoming at the airport and transfer to Boquete, a charming town known for growing one of the best coffees in the world.
We’ll take a coffee tour starting right on the fields, where you will get a glimpse of the three vital factors that influence the coffee’s quality: the soil, the micro-climate, and the particular genetics of the variety; and you will learn about the history, origin, qualities and secrets of coffee handling. In the second phase of the tour, you will learn about coffee production – all the way from ripe coffee cherry to roasted bean. Then, you will be able to taste different varieties of coffee and learn how to distinguish between different taste tones. Instructions will be given on how to prepare a good cup of coffee by learning about water temperature, time, toasting and grinding, and different brewing methods like Coffee Maker, French Press, Drip brew and Boiling.
To end the tour, you will have the opportunity to visit a Brewing company to learn about the process and taste some local beers and light lunch. This is the only micro brewing company in Boquete.
DAY 05 Boquete (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Today we’ll take an exciting tour on the cloud forest. We will start with a hanging bridges hike, which is a unique opportunity to enjoy from a different perspective the biodiversity of the tropical cloud forest of Panama. You will cross 8 suspension bridges ranging from 70 to 135 meters long, and with heights that can reach the 75 meters above ground. You will be able to see century-old trees, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife including native species, monkeys, and even the famous Quetzal. In addition, some of the hanging bridges are placed above a beautiful river that will give you amazing landscapes to enjoy.
DAY 06 Boquete – Almirante – Colon Island (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Almirante (3.5 hours), where we will take a shared boat transfer to Colon Island, located in Bocas del Toro, a colorful archipelago with incomparable biodiversity; a unique and privileged destination for the observation of fauna and flora.
DAY 07 Colon Island / Dolphin’s Bay, Crawls Cay & Zapatilla Cay (B/L)
Breakfast at the hotel. This full day tour begins with a short boat ride to Laguna Bocatorito or Dolphin’s Bay, where you’ll have the chance to spot the semi-permanent population of bottlenose dolphins.
After this, we will visit two of the most important snorkeling points in the area. First, we will make a stop in Crawl Cay. This tiny island is surrounded by lush coral gardens with an abundance of tropical fishes, coral heads and colorful sponges. Then, we will visit Zapatilla Cay, located on the southeastern of the Bastimentos National Marine Park – 30 minutes’ boat ride from Crawl Cay. Zapatilla Cay is considered the most beautiful island of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago and offers visitors pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters and some of Panama’s most attractive coral reefs – with lots of tropical fish, and crevices full of lobsters, crabs, eels and an immense amount of tiny sea invertebrates.
DAY 08 Colon Island (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Day at leisure.
DAY 09 Colon Island – Almirante – San José (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Shared boat transfer to Almirante. Private transfer to Sixaola border to continue to San Jose.
DAY 10 San José – Arenal (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Arenal. On our way we will visit Grecia and Sarchí.
Sarchí is Costa Rica’s most famous crafts center, best-known for its elaborately painted oxcarts, which were declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The town offers more than 200 stores and small family-operated woodworking factories producing wooden bowls and other tableware, fold-up rocking chairs of wood and leather, and a wide variety of kitschy items.
The picturesque town of Grecia is situated in Costa Rica’s Central Valley amidst beautiful mountain landscapes. Being an important agricultural hub of the country, sugar cane is grown in Grecia in huge amounts, as is organic coffee and pineapples. This town is an important tourist destination mainly due to its unique metal church. The Cathedral de la Mercedes is a gothic style church made from metal pieces that were imported from Belgium in the 1890s.
DAY 11 Arenal (B/L)
Breakfast at the hotel. After a short 35-minute drive, we will arrive at beautiful area dedicated to reforestation located in the mountainous area around the Children’s Eternal Rainforest. Here you will take a short walk where you will be able to discover the rainforest and some of its unique animals such as the anteater, morpho butterflies, several tropical bird species and much more. Then, you will plant a tree in the area designed for this purpose. Afterwards, we will stop for a short visit to the San Jorge School, a one room school house where you will share a delicious snack of fresh fruit with the children.
Next, we will take a 15-minute ride to Los Toños Family Farm, where you will learn about the daily lifestyle of a Costa Rican farm family, their customs, traditions, and daily chores. You will explore the plantations of black pepper, vanilla, yucca, coffee, banana, corn, and many other traditional crops.
Finally, you will enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh products from the farm prepared on a wood burning stove for the most authentic Costa Rican flavor, before returning to La Fortuna in the late afternoon.
DAY 12 Arenal – Monteverde (B/D)
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Monteverde. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most famous conservation areas in Central America. The cloud forest receives an incredible four meters of rain every year- over twelve feet! It is home to rare and unusual wildlife, such as jaguars and pumas, and over 450 species of birds including the world’s largest population of quetzal birds.
DAY 13 Monteverde (B/L/D)
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Selvatura Park. We will take an exciting Canopy Tour going through the cloud forest. The tour starts up at the main dressing room where the visitors will get geared up and taken to the instruction platform. The tour covers a total of 2 miles with 15 cables, 18 platforms and one Tarzan Swing. After this thrilling experience, it’s time for the treetop walkways tour. This tour consists of 1.9 miles of trails in which you will walk on eight bridges of various lengths, ranging between 170 feet and 560 feet. Each bridge is 5-foot-wide, with a capacity of maximal 80 people per bridge. The treetop walkways can be enjoyed by people of all ages and physical conditions as most of the trails are flat and covered with special walking block for better traction. During this part of the tour you will be able to appreciate a wide variety of flora and can also observe the biodiversity of the cloud forest. At the end of the tour you will enjoy a typical and delicious lunch.
DAY 14 Monteverde – Carara National Park – Manuel Antonio (B/L)
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Manuel Antonio. We will visit Carara National Park, located in the Turrubares and Garabito cantons, in the provinces of San José and Puntarenas.
Carara National Park, which means “river of lizards” in the Huetar indigenous language, has the only transitional forest in the Central Pacific, resulting in a diversity of flora and fauna where native species of both dry forests and rain forests converge. This national park is a world-renowned ornithological destination and has extremely diverse birdlife, specifically the scarlet macaw (Ara macao), an endangered species that is the second largest Psittacidae species in Costa Rica. Without a doubt it is one of the main sites in the country for birdwatching.
DAY 15 Manuel Antonio (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning shared visit to Manuel Antonio National Park, which is surrounded by a lush tropical very wet forest and in their paths, you can find capuchin monkeys, sloths, coatis, raccoons, iguanas and many species of birds, as well as the squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii citrinellus), endemic to Manuel Antonio. The Park protects also 12 Islands that represent excellent shelter for several species of marine birds. It also has excellent beaches: Espadilla Sur, Manuel Antonio and Puerto Escondido. Manuel Antonio is closed on Mondays.
DAY 16 Manuel Antonio – San Jose International Airport (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Juan Santamaria Airport. (Duration 3.5 hours). Presentation at the airline counter should be 3 hours before flight departure.
